Around the World with Hei Hei: A grandparent's tale of magical deception

Updated: Aug 1

In the spirit of creating magical memories and sparking the imagination of my granddaughter, I embarked on a playful journey with none other than Hei Hei, the hilariously clueless rooster from the beloved Disney movie “Moana.”

The Goal

To convince my granddaughter that Moana herself sent Hei Hei to spend some time with me on my travels while my granddaughter was fast asleep.

The Plan

I purchased an identical Disney Moana Squeeze and Scream Hei Hei Toy Figure to the one my granddaughter owned and devised a plan to take him on my travels around the world.

Capturing the Magic

Armed with my phone camera, I began documenting Hei Hei's escapades around the world. Each photo was carefully shot to capture not just the essence of the location, but also the whimsy of having a cartoon rooster as a travel partner.

Sharing the Adventure

Each picture was sent to my granddaughter with a little note from Hei Hei, telling her about his adventures and the sights he saw. I would describe the landmarks, the food, and even the friends he made along the way in vivid detail, ensuring each story sparked an image of a wide-eyed rooster marveling at the world.

The Big Reveal

After months of receiving postcards and photographs from around the world, the big reveal was a special moment. My granddaughter acted extremely surprised to learn there was a second Hei Hei in the mix. The truth is that she never totally believed me – but she played along anyway.

Lessons and Laughter

This playful project taught us both so much more than just geography. It was a lesson in creativity, storytelling, and the joy of maintaining the wonder of childhood as long as possible. It also showed me the power of simple acts to create lasting memories.

Who knew that a rooster with a penchant for getting lost could help us find such joy and connection in each other's imaginations?
