Beyond Words: Lessons from a linguistic faux pas

Picture a bustling lecture hall, a question that sidetracks, and a single word - inscrutable - that hangs in the air, heavy with unintended consequences. This is the story of how a moment of linguistic misstep turned into a profound teaching moment for both professor and students alike.

Being a university professor, I have always prioritized the use of precise and intentional language, viewing it as a crucial tool in my profession. An incident in a lecture to veterinary students many years ago emphasized that even experienced educators make mistakes.

Students were buzzing with energy in the lecture hall on a typical Wednesday. During a discussion on a complex topic, a student in the front row asked her fourth question, causing the discussion to go further off track.

In a moment of frustration, I snapped back, “You’re... you’re... inscrutable!”

I couldn’t hold back the words, and they filled the room with an uncomfortable silence. Panic consumed me internally as the silence lingered. What did inscrutable actually mean? Is it possible that the word inscrutable might be seen as derogatory? Had I just jeopardized my professional standing with a careless choice of words?

I pondered on the potential consequences until a student’s voice broke the tension, saying, “Don’t worry, Dr. LeCouteur. The word inscrutable refers to something mysterious and enigmatic."

This episode served as a powerful reminder of the duties we carry as educators. The words we choose hold power - they can inspire or discourage, clarify or perplex. It underscored the necessity of being constantly prepared, both in our teaching plans and in our language proficiency.

Looking back on my time lecturing, I’ve narrowed it down to two key lessons for any university professor:

1. Acknowledging your own gaps in knowledge or admitting a mistake demonstrates to students that learning is an ongoing journey.

2. Encouraging students to voice their uncertainties not only resolves confusion but also fosters an interactive educational environment.

This event reinforced the need for me to continuously enhance my language skills, an essential element of successful teaching.

Academia offers daily challenges and growth opportunities for both students and teachers. The incident, labeled as inscrutable, was a clear indication that in education, we never stop learning.
