Did you know that the Australian coat of arms holds a hidden message of progress? The design features two iconic native animals - the kangaroo and the emu - chosen not just for their national significance but for a deeper reason: neither of them can move backward easily. This unique trait symbolizes a nation committed to always moving forward.

What is a Coat of Arms?

A coat of arms is a heraldic symbol representing a country, family, or institution. It typically includes a shield, supporters (animals or figures on either side), a crest, and sometimes a motto. Coats of arms have long been used to convey identity, values, and historical significance. Australia's coat of arms is no different, carrying a profound message about national resilience and unity.

Symbolism Behind Australia's Coat of Arms

The Australian coat of arms, officially granted by King George V in 1912, is rich in symbolism.

At its center, the shield displays the emblems of Australia's six states: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania. These emblems represent the unique heritage and governance of each state while emphasizing their unity under the Commonwealth.

Supporting the shield are the kangaroo and the emu, two native species known for their endurance and adaptability. Their inclusion in the coat of arms is not just a nod to Australia’s rich biodiversity but also a symbolic representation of progress.

Because these animals struggle to move backward, they embody the spirit of a nation that looks ahead with determination and resilience.

Additional Elements of the Coat of Arms

Above the shield sits the Commonwealth Star, also known as the Federation Star, with seven points - six representing the states, and one for the territories. It rests on a gold and blue wreath, signifying Australia’s ties to the British monarchy. Below the shield, a grassy mound features Australia’s national floral emblem, the golden wattle, which further reinforces the country's identity and unity.

Rick's Commentary

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Australian coat of arms conveys a powerful message. The kangaroo and emu are not just symbolic guardians of the shield; they are reminders of Australia's forward-thinking ethos. The nation has continuously adapted, evolved, and overcome challenges, just like these resilient creatures navigating the vast Australian landscape.

The coat of arms serves as a daily emblem of national pride, reminding Australians that progress is not just an idea, it is a fundamental part of their identity.

Whether in times of hardship or celebration, Australia’s commitment to moving forward remains steadfast, just like the creatures that represent it.

Always forward, never back.
