Four-eyed Frog Books: A hub for community and connection

Updated: Jul 30

I pulled off the Pacific Coast Highway in the small seaside town of Gualala, California. The town, surrounded by impressive redwoods and steep cliffs, guaranteed a calm sanctuary away from the chaos of city life. My first stop was not the beach, however, but a community bookstore I’d heard about - Four-eyed Frog Books.

The moment I stepped inside, I felt the store’s inviting warmth, which stood in stark contrast to the refreshing coastal air outside. The crisp aroma of fresh paper and ink filled the room, while cozy lights accentuated the abundance of books on the shelves. I was captivated by the colorful illustrations and bold titles in the children’s book section located in full view of the entrance.

The children’s section buzzed with excitement as kids lounged on the floor, engrossed in books that captivated their imaginations. I explored the shelves, appreciating the wide range of children's books available, from timeless classics to captivating new adventures.

Jill was positioned behind the counter. With a love for literature shining in her eyes and a bright smile, she was the heartbeat of Four-eyed Frog Books. While I was about to pay for some children’s books written by Jeanne Jackson, a local author, I overheard Jill talking to another customer about a novel they were purchasing.

“If that author entertained you,” Jill commented, effortlessly working the cash register, “you may also find this one appealing. It’s got the same blend of adventure and mystery that makes the one you chose so compelling.”

At the bookstore, Jill and I chatted for an hour about a wide range of topics, including young readers, Bluey, and other children’s picture book titles. Her recommendations were perfect, demonstrating her extensive knowledge and love for various types of books.

Once I left Four-eyed Frog Books, I experienced a sensation of having stepped into the past, when bookstores were not solely about book sales, but were vibrant focal points of the community, overflowing with enthusiasm and character. Jill’s friendly and perceptive conversation was a unique pleasure, as she clearly enjoyed sharing her love for books with anyone who stepped inside.

I handed Jill a signed copy of my most recent children’s book, Nasty Names Are Hurtful. As she flipped through the pages, her eyes sparkled with delight as the authentic illustrations brought the story to life. “These illustrations are remarkable, and the story line is so engaging and important for kids to hear,” she commented, her voice filled with genuine enthusiasm. Assured of its appeal to both young readers and their parents, she committed to showcasing it in the children’s section. Her positive response and encouraging words touched my heart.

As I drove away, my purchases beside me, I knew I’d return. Four-eyed Frog Books was more than just a bookstore. If you’re traveling along the California coast, make sure to stop by Gualala’s community bookstore - it’s a hidden gem.
