Gateway to Wonder: Dymocks on George Street

Updated: Sep 14

Almost every month, tucked away in a bustling Sydney street, a little piece of magic awaited me - a chair, a corner, and endless adventures between the pages at Dymocks bookstore.

Nestled in the heart of Sydney, along the bustling George Street, stands an iconic landmark that holds a special place in my heart. For many, Dymocks is a haven for readers of all ages, but for me it was the gateway to a world brimming with magic and endless possibilities.

As a child, my visits to the city were marked by a delightful routine. My mother, keen on her shopping trips to nearby department stores, would drop me off at Dymocks. There, I would beeline to the children’s section, a cozy corner that seemed to welcome me with open arms. Surrounded by towering shelves stocked with colorful picture books, I found my little paradise.

Each book I picked up whisked me away on a new adventure. I sailed the seas with pirates, explored wild jungles, and even walked amongst dinosaurs. Those hours spent in the soft, inviting chairs of Dymocks were more than just reading time; they were my initial steps into a lifelong journey of storytelling.

Steeped in History and Leadership

Dymocks isn’t just a bookstore; it's a vital part of Australian cultural heritage. Founded in 1879 by William Dymock, the store flourished under his guidance, growing from a small bookshop on Market Street to what was eventually Dymock’s Book Arcade on George Street, housing a million books. Today, under the stewardship of John Forsyth, William's grandnephew, Dymocks stands as the largest bookseller in Australia, commanding nearly 20% of the nation's book market.

The business, which is entirely Australian-owned and operated, has expanded to include 60 stores across Australia, employing over 800 individuals. Despite facing shifts to the digital age, Dymocks has evolved, embracing online sales and multimedia products, while still fostering a love for reading.

This bookstore, with its wide aisles and friendly staff, encouraged a child's curiosity and imagination. It was at Dymocks that I not only learned to love books but also dreamed of one day creating my own stories to add to those magical shelves.

Dymocks on George Street isn’t just a store; it’s a treasured part of Sydney’s cultural fabric. It stands as a testament to the joy of reading and the impact it can have on a young mind. For anyone visiting this wonderful city, a stop at Dymocks is a must - not just to browse through the latest bestsellers but to soak in the atmosphere of a place that has sparked countless imaginations across generations.

So, here’s to Dymocks, a bookstore that does more than sell books - it nurtures dreamers.
