Have you ever noticed that in advertisements for clocks and watches, the time is almost always set to 10:10?

Whether it’s a luxury Rolex, a rugged Casio, or a classic wall clock, the hands are positioned in the same way. This is no accident. The 10:10 setting is a deliberate choice, made for a variety of reasons that blend aesthetics, branding, and psychology.

Aesthetic Symmetry

One of the main reasons for using 10:10 is that it creates a visually pleasing, symmetrical look. The hour and minute hands form an upward-facing “V” shape, which is naturally balanced and appealing to the human eye. This symmetrical positioning prevents the watch from looking lopsided, as it might if set to a time like 2:30 or 8:20. It also ensures that the hands do not overlap, keeping both clearly visible.

Highlighting the Logo and Features

Many watch brands place their logos just below the 12 o’clock position. Setting the hands to 10:10 frames the logo perfectly, allowing it to remain unobstructed. Additionally, other features such as date windows, chronographs, or branding text located near the 3, 6, or 9 o’clock positions remain visible and unobscured.

Creating a Positive Impression

The 10:10 position gives the impression of a smile. If you look at the watch face, the upward tilt of the hands mimics the shape of a smiling mouth. This subtle psychological trick evokes positive emotions, making the product more appealing to potential buyers. In contrast, times like 8:20 form a downward-facing frown, which may subconsciously discourage sales.

Consistency and Industry Standards

Since this has become the norm across the watch industry, it has become a standard that customers subconsciously expect. If a watch advertisement displayed a different time, it might look out of place or unfamiliar, reducing its effectiveness in capturing consumer interest.

Historical Significance?

Some people speculate that 10:10 was chosen to honor historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln or John F. Kennedy, whose deaths were supposedly around this time, but there is no strong evidence to support these claims. The decision is more about marketing strategy than historical tribute.

Rick's Commentary

The 10:10 setting in watch and clock advertisements is a small but impactful detail that showcases the product in the best possible way. It ensures symmetry, keeps branding elements visible, and even evokes a subtle sense of positivity.
